MOSS 2007 Search Crawling Error – Access Denied

A problem occured with the search functionailty in SharePoint. It had been working for many months and decided to bottle it. I had multiple errors in the log, I tried re-setting the index and re-crawling and ended up with a nasty error message:

Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content. (The item was deleted because it was either not found or the crawler was denied access to it.)

So I double checked that the account in use had the correct settings and permissions. Turned out this is caused by a fault by design.

To fix this, follow the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861
